Has God Rejected His People? (Romans 11:1)

A Bible-study on Romans 9-11 is provocative to say the least – in light of the present dreadful situation in Israel/Palestine.  It is hard to feel much empathy for Israel in light of reports of their apparent mistreatment of their neighbours.

That being said, perhaps we may also be reminded of the ‘holocaust’, the harsh persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany.  One of those who sought to draw attention to it and to offer shelter to them in Switzerland was the Swiss theologian, Karl Barth.  “What would we be, what are we Christians, without Israel?  Whoever rejects and persecutes the Jews, is also rejecting and persecuting the one who died for our sins….  Antisemitism is a sin against the Holy Spirit.  For antisemitism means the rejection of God’s grace”.

Yes, reading Romans 9-11 together will be provocative, however we look at it.  That being said, I trust we shall stay attentive above all to St Paul’s remarkable text.  I look forward to studying it with you.
