This Sunday we welcome back the St. Jude's Choir at our 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist service. Each week through "Music Notes" St. Jude's parishioners are invited to learn a little more about how the music we experience in our worship fits into the greater liturgical and choral history of the Anglican Church.
Sunday's mass setting, 'Deutsche Messe' by Franz Schubert (1797-1828); arranged by Richard Proulx (1937-2010), is a curious work as it was originally neither a mass setting nor strictly speaking, German. Instead, it is a song cycle of eight non-liturgical poems written by two Austrians, Franz Schubert and Johann Philipp Neumann, and was intended to be sung during a Mass either in its entirety or partially. Eventually it gained popularity in the English-speaking world when it was adapted into the Mass ordinary by American composer and arranger Richard Proulx in 1985.
