Musicians around the world will be commemorating this week the 100th anniversary of Gabriel Fauré’s passing on November 4, 1924. During Sunday’s Choral Eucharist we will remember the French master with his Agnus Dei et Lux Aeterna from Requiem in D minor, Op. 48. Known for its serene and hopeful tone, Fauré forgoes the bombastic tropes of most romantic era requiem settings and instead provides the listener an opportunity to reflect on the beauty and fragility of human life.
Sunday’s prelude, Gammal fäbodpsalm från Dalarna (‘Old Cattle Pasture Hymn from Dalarna’), for trumpet and organ is by Swedish-born composer Oskar Lindberg. The fäbodpsalms were traditionally sung by women as they tended the cattle and sheep atop mountains at their summer pasture. The tune in Lindberg’s version, one of the most famous, is a haunting and melancholy tune from his native region of Dalarna. We are delighted to be joined this Sunday by trumpeter Susan Barber Kahro and organist William O’Meara
