Scam Emails In Circulation

There are always a certain number of scam emails circulating, and clergy seem to be a popular target for impersonation thanks to their position of trust. We have again recently heard from parishioners who have received fake emails that seem to be coming from our rector. It is important for you to know that our clergy will never send you an email asking for gift cards or money directly.

These emails commonly give some vague excuse for not being able to talk on the phone. That is a red flag to watch out for. If the tone of the email seems a little off, or if it seems like an unusual request, please check the email address carefully - not just the name - that the message came from. Even email addresses may be made to appear that the messages have come from the clergy or the parish office. If you are still not sure, send a separate email to the person that the message appears to be from, and do not respond by replying to the suspicious message.

Please remember, your clergy will never ask you to purchase gift cards on their behalf or to send them money directly.
