There are always a certain number of scam emails circulating, and clergy seem to be a popular target for impersonation thanks to their position of trust. Unfortunately, today we have heard from more than half a dozen people who have received fake emails that seem to be coming from our rector, Canon David. It is important for you to know that our clergy will never send you an email asking for gift cards.
These emails commonly give some vague excuse for not being able to talk on the phone. That is a red flag to watch out for. If the tone of the email seems a little off, or if it seems like an unusual request, please check the email address - not just the name - that the message came from. If you are still not sure, send a separate email to the person that the message appears to be from, do not respond to the suspicious message.
Please remember, your clergy will never ask you to purchase gift cards on their behalf.
