The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts. Psalm 46:6
We live in a time with multiple crises around the world. War is presently escalating in the Middle East. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has continued since 2014, and with its recent escalation in 2022, there have been significant civilian casualties and destruction of homes and infrastructure. Myanmar remains in its longstanding civil war. The Mexican drug war continues to reign havoc upon the people of that nation. Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the civil war in Sudan. Terrorist insurgencies continue unchecked in many African nations, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Libya.
At the same time, the economic issues faced by many nations are extremely challenging. Embargos, sanctions, and unfair trading practices put many vulnerable people at risk. Human trafficking is on the rise. The climate crisis deepens with few signs of real action to avoid climate collapse. Many young people in our country are losing hope for their own future.
In the United States, during the present election cycle, we have heard extremist language fueling fears and division. Many communities feel themselves to be at risk.
On the day before election day in the United States, you are invited to join in a day of prayer for the nations. St. Jude's Church will have its doors open for the day, from 11 AM to 6 PM, for quiet prayer. Mid-day prayers will be offered in the church at 12 noon and Evening Prayer will be said at 5 PM.
For those who wish to keep this day of prayer at home or elsewhere, we have published prayer resources that you could use at different times throughout the day. They can be found here.
Psalm 46 addresses the nations in their tumult. It is in that context that God says, "Be still and know that I am God" (v. 10a). Through our prayers may we - and the people of the world - know that "The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge" (Psalm 46:11).
