We have two variations of this program:
- Using the kitchen at St. Simon’s (on Trafalgar Rd), each month, volunteer teams of 3-5 people shop for and cook approximately 100 – 120 meals cooked about 120 meals in the kitchen at St. Simon’s Church in Oakville. The meals are packaged in 50 or 60 two-serving plastic containers and taken to Boffo’s Delicatessen (on Kerr Street) for freezing and temporary storage. The frozen meals are later delivered by St. Jude’s volunteers to the Links2Care office in Oakville.
Links2Care is a social service agency whose case managers deliver the frozen meals to their clients who are homeless or homebound and unable to cook for themselves.
Volunteer teams can choose the meals they want to prepare from within a rotation of items, including Shepherd’s Pie, chili, sausage, and lentil soup, roast pork with sweet potatoes and corn.
- We run a weekly Thursday afternoon programme called ‘Dinner at Your Door” that delivers hot freshly prepared meals both to Links2Care clients and to others on low incomes experiencing food insecurity in Oakville. The meals are prepared by staff and volunteers at our partner agency Frontline Outreach (FLO) on Kerr St. Our volunteers meet at FLOat 1pm and, working in pairs or small groups, deliver the food (and occasionally other items) to the clients. Please note a vulnerable sector police check is required for this volunteer activity.
Prepared Meals for Delivery is one of the programs set up through St. Jude’s Justice and Servant Ministry team. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please click the Volunteer Now button to be directed to a team member via the St. Jude’s office.
