St. Jude’s has been cooking and serving community meals at Kerr Street Mission (KSM) over many years.
For the past 12 years, we have cooked and served two meals per month at KSM, one Monday Family dinner and one Thursday dinner, using two different volunteer teams 6 – 10 people. Our focus is to serve nutritional, high quality food and to accommodate our guests’ food requirements, including vegetarian and Halal. To do that, we typically prepare two main meat dishes, that are Halal, a vegetarian dish, and salad with fresh fruit and ice cream for dessert. We us
Within the Monday and Thursday teams, volunteers are divided into cooks and servers as St. Jude’s has responsibility for the entire meal, from grocery shopping to preparation, serving and clean up. We cook sufficient quantity to serve 100 meals as we do not know in advance how many people will come for the dinner. This ensures we always have enough food to serve, and any leftovers can be sent home with guests.
There is a Coordinator for each of the Monday and Thursday dinners, who communicate with volunteers regarding availability for each month. Typical time commitment is a couple of hours; cooking volunteers are needed from 3:00 to 5:30 pm and serving volunteers from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
COVID Update: KSM cancelled all community dinners during the pandemic and asked volunteers to cook and package meals in single servings for take away. Since we have less volunteers from St. Jude’s because of COVID, we have reduced the number of meals we can prepare.
We are not taking new volunteers in this program right now, or until KSM is able to resume congregate dining (whichever is sooner). If you are interested in volunteering, please click the Volunteer Now button to provide your name and contact information so we can reach out to you when the community dinners are back on at KSM.
